In the Wake Cinema
Community Screenings Through Kinema Partnership
At In the Wake Media, we believe cinema is a gathering space—a place where community comes together to witness stories, celebrate culture, and build collective power. Through our partnership with Kinema, we're bringing curated film screenings to communities across New York and beyond, creating spaces for authentic storytelling, cultural celebration, and meaningful dialogue.
What Is In the Wake Cinema?
In the Wake Cinema is our monthly film screening series that honors Black cinema, independent filmmakers, LGBTQ+ storytelling, and cultural narratives that challenge dominant media. Each screening is more than a movie—it's a community experience featuring:
- Curated Films - Documentaries, features, and experimental work centering marginalized voices
- Cultural Celebration - Honoring birthdays, heritage months, and cultural moments
- Post-Film Discussion - Space for dialogue, reflection, and community connection
- Affordable Access - Free and low-cost screenings for community members
- Snacks & Community - $1 snacks and refreshments to support accessibility
Who is Kinema?
Kinema is a platform dedicated to community cinema and cultural storytelling. Together, In the Wake Media and Kinema are creating accessible, in-person screening experiences that celebrate Black life, LGBTQ+ narratives, and independent media.
Why Kinema?
- Shared commitment to community-centered cinema
- Access to diverse venues across NYC
- Support for independent and marginalized filmmakers
- Dedication to affordable, accessible screenings
- Alignment with our values of cultural sovereignty and collective liberation
Our Commitment
Every In the Wake Cinema screening is an act of resistance against corporate media monopolies and a celebration of collective liberation. We're building cinema as community infrastructure—a space where Black life is centered, LGBTQ+ stories are honored, and marginalized voices shape the narrative.
In the Wake Media is a worker-owned cooperative committed to media justice, digital equity, and collective liberation. Cinema is resistance. Community is power. ✊🏾🎬✨
